What is This Stuff and What Do I Do with It? Meet Your New Favorite Thing You Didn't Know You Needed Chikka Chikka is an 'in-between' thing. In-between fun snack and serious medicine. In-between sweet and savory. In-between East and West. For those moments in-between lunch and dinner. For those moments when you want to linger at the party, or after the munchies kick in. We took fennel seeds – yes, those magical little seeds that have been keeping digestive systems happy since before Instagram made "gut health" a thing. We then roast these powerful little seeds with a blend of other medicinal ingredients so pure and effective, it would make Gwyneth wish she'd thought of it first. Using it is ridiculously simple. And fun. Shake the tin to let the Chikka Chikka sound cleanse your energy field. Pop open the tin to hear the satisfying click (do this repeatedly if you are a fidgeter). Then tap a few seeds into your palm, like you're feeding the world's fanciest little bird. Pop them in your mouth and let the chewing commence. Then let out a great big sigh. Cuz that feels nice. It's essentially mouth yoga, but without the constant worry that you're doing it wrong. The best part? This little tin is like having a wellness coach who actually gets you. It lives in your pocket, doesn't judge your life choices, and never once suggests you need to work harder. Remember to enjoy and savor those 'in-between' moments. Much to our parents’ chagrin, we have defied what is expected of children of South Asian immigrants. We tried to stay on a straight path. We really did. We got degrees. We got normal jobs. But then we got married in 2016 and collectively took a sharp left turn. Together. We were looking for a house, but then ‘accidentally’ bought an abandoned biker bar and transformed it into an award-winning and well-loved restaurant and community gathering place. We sold that business to an aspiring Michelin star chef, and now we think that anything is possible. Guided by a gentle blend of delusion, love, laughter, and fondness for stuff from the old country, we have created Chikka Chikka. Because, why not. -Arif & Sabeen Other Frequently Asked Questions (and Some Never-Asked Questions) ½ teaspoon at a time is what we do. Maybe limit yourself to one tin (1 ounce) per day. Good luck ;) How many servings are in each tin? There are about 20 servings per 1 oz tin. We partner with two facilities in the Hudson Valley to produce Chikka Chikka. One is a non-profit that employs veterans and people with disabilities. The other is a local bean-to-bar chocolate maker. These facilities also process milk, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, eggs, soy, and sesame. Not all ingredients, but the maple syrup, beet powder, cinnamon, mint, and spirulina are organic. We are currently looking for certified organic fennel and coriander seeds. More importantly, we have had everything tested by a third party lab (EMSL), and they show no traces of pesticides or heavy metals. We use whole spices that we grind ourselves, so we know there are no addatives. Where do your ingredients come from? The maple syrup is local from New York. The coriander, fennel, and cardamom, are from India. The cinnamon is from Sri Lanka. The mint is from Oregon. Why don't you have those colorful balls that I've seen in other mixes? I love those. We like bright colors also! But we like them better on the packaging and not in our bodies. Those colorful balls are made from sugar and artificial colors and flavors. We wanted to make something healthier. We heat up the maple syrup to thicken it, and then slowly roast the fennel with maple syrup in a panner to coat and candy the seeds in small batches and then mix the rest of the ingredients. For the mint and cinnamon varieties, we make it in two separate batches: For the mint, we add spirulina to one batch. For the cinnamon, we add beet root powder to one batch. There, now you can go make your own! Why did you start your business? Sabeen has a fennel seed habit that is a bit out of control. She would roast her own seeds and sweeten and mix them because she couldn’t find a product out there that wasn’t filled with artificial junk. When we brought some on a hiking trip with our friends Joel and Molly they loved it saying ‘we would totally buy this’, and 'where can we get some?.' That is all we needed to hear to decide to start this venture (because Arif loves doing things he's never considered before). We love building a small business because it allows us to interact with so many other creative and interesting folks doing what they love. It also allows us the freedom to make up things as we go along...which is what we do best. When did you start your company? Like with most foods, especially those with medicinal properties, you don't want to overdo it. There is no clear guidance, but from what we have read, you don't want to eat more than 2 ounces of Chikka Chikka per day. Why is Chikka Chikka more expensive than other Indian fennel seed mixes? Most Indian fennel seed mixes are primarily made from refined sugar and wax and other junk. Chikka Chikka is made from high quality fennel seeds blended with other high-quality, organic ingredients. Instead of refined sugar, we use organic maple syrup as a sweetener. How does Chikka Chikka work as a digestive? Fennel is an alkaline food and raises the pH in your mouth and the upper part of the digestive system to create a healing microbiome. Fennel also contains anethole which has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and thus addresses intestinal inflammation which is tied to a lot of health issues. Google it! Why is there some variation in the product? Our product is made in small batches, without the use of added 'stabilizers' - ingredients like emulsifiers and gums. Some variation results from how real maple syrup and other whole food ingredients behave when heated without the use of such additives. Am I asking too many questions? Never! Stay curious, my friend.
